Best Practices for Storing Lyophilized Peptides: Freezer, Refrigerator, and Bench

Guidelines for keeping lyophilized peptides stable by choosing the right temperature and protecting them from moisture and light.

Lyophilized peptides are most stable when kept dry and at low temperature. For long-term storage, place vials in a -20 °C or -80 °C freezer that is not subject to frequent door openings. Use airtight, low-moisture secondary containers such as sealed zip-lock bags with desiccant packs to guard against condensation when the freezer cycles.

If you need to access peptides regularly, a 2-8 °C refrigerator is a practical compromise. Store the vials in a dedicated, low-humidity compartment and avoid placing them near the door or in the light-exposed area of the fridge. Replace desiccant packs periodically and monitor for any signs of moisture, such as clumping or a change in texture.

For short-term work on the bench, keep the lyophilized material in a desiccator or a sealed container with a fresh desiccant packet. Keep the container away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and high humidity. Limit the time the vial is open to a few minutes and reseal promptly to prevent water uptake.

When moving samples between storage conditions, allow the vials to equilibrate to room temperature inside a sealed container before opening. This prevents rapid condensation on the peptide powder. Record the storage location, temperature, and date of each transfer in your lab notebook to maintain traceability and ensure reproducibility of experiments.
