A concise guide to recording experimental details so colleagues can repeat the work exactly.
Start each entry with the date, lab identifier, and a brief statement of the experiment’s purpose. Use a bound notebook or an electronic lab notebook that timestamps entries to ensure a permanent record.
List every reagent, buffer, and consumable with its exact concentration, supplier, catalog number, and lot number. Note any preparation steps such as pH adjustment, filtration, or sterilization, and record the storage conditions used before the experiment.
Describe the protocol in sequential order, including volumes, incubation times, temperatures, and equipment settings. If you deviate from a standard method, write a clear rationale and the exact change made.
Capture raw data as soon as it is generated. Include instrument software versions, calibration dates, and any data processing steps. Keep calculations transparent by showing formulas and intermediate values.
Before closing the notebook entry, review the record for completeness, then archive a digital copy in a shared repository with appropriate metadata. Use version control or a naming convention so future users can locate the exact dataset and protocol used.
