A concise guide to recording experimental details so colleagues can repeat your work.
Start each experiment with a clear objective and a brief protocol outline. List all reagents, their lot numbers, concentrations, and the source. Note the exact dates of preparation, any storage conditions, and the time elapsed between preparation and use.
Record every step in chronological order, using timestamps when possible. Include instrument settings, temperature, pH, and any deviations from the planned method. Capture raw data files, screenshots, and calibration logs, and reference them with file names or accession numbers.
Use a consistent format for all entries, whether in a bound notebook, electronic lab notebook, or version-controlled repository. Tag each entry with a unique experiment identifier and cross-reference related experiments or controls.
At the end of the work, write a brief summary that highlights key observations, any troubleshooting performed, and the final outcomes. Attach a checklist of items that must be verified before another researcher attempts to repeat the experiment.
Store the documentation in a location accessible to the whole team, and back it up regularly. Periodically review older records to ensure they still meet current standards for clarity and completeness.
