Why Lyophilized Peptides Ship at Room Temperature (and When Cold Matters)

Published Aug 24, 2026

Research peptides are supplied as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder in sealed vials. In that dry form they are stable at ambient temperature for the length of a normal transit, which is why every PepXtide order ships at room temperature. Nothing ships with ice or cold packs, and a dry vial in a sealed, light-protected pack does not need them.

Why a dry vial does not need a cold chain

Most of what degrades a peptide happens in solution: water is what allows hydrolysis, aggregation and microbial growth. Freeze-drying removes that water before the vial is sealed, so the powder has very little to react with while it travels. What a dry vial does need protecting from is light, moisture and impact, and that is what the packaging is for. The cold chain that liquid reagents and enzyme solutions depend on is a different problem, and it does not apply to a sealed lyophilized vial.

When cold matters: on arrival

Room temperature is right for the journey, not for long-term storage. When the vials arrive, move them to a freezer at -20C, kept sealed and away from light and moisture. Let a vial come back to room temperature before you open it, so condensation does not form on the powder.

When cold matters: after reconstitution

Once a peptide is reconstituted it is in solution, and cold becomes important. Store reconstituted material at 2-8C, protected from light, and follow the storage guidance on its product page. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles degrade peptides in solution, so aliquot first if you need longer-term storage.
